BMP4, epidermis, otic, spinal

BMP4, nucleic acid

Cloned by a number of labs. This particular clone was isolated by Nishimatsu et al. 1992. These in situs are from Ali Hemmati-Brivanlou and Jerry Thomsen.
B. C. D.
B. Expression of BMP-4 is localized to a ventro-lateral crescent of mesoderm at stage 10.5; the dorso-ventral axis is indicated.
C. A vegetal (left) and a dorsal (right) view of a stage 11.5 embryo. The ventrolateral crescent of mesodermal BMP-4 expression is visible in the embryo on the left. In both views expression of BMP-4 is visible in the anterior, ventral and lateral ectoderm, but BMP-4 is visibly absent from the posterior-dorsal ectoderm which will become the neural plate. the dorsal-ventral (left embryo) and antero-posterior (right embryo) axes are indicated.
D. Posterior view of a stage 12.5 embryo showing the dark BMP-4 staining ventral to the proctodeum and laterally in the ectoderm. Again the future neural plate does not express BMP-4; dorsal (d) and ventral (v) are indicated.
E. F. G.
E. Dorsal-posterior view of a stage 14 embryo indicating BMP-4 expression in the ventro-posterior, and in the epidermis along the flank of the elongating neural plate (anterior at top).
F. Anterior-lateral view at stage 18. Note strong BMP-4 expression in the ventral anterior, and weaker expression in the epidermis.
G. Stage 24 embryo (cleared) pointing out expression in posterior and anterior ventral patches near the anus and VBI, anterior crescent of the eye, and otic vesicle. Small patches of BMP-4 expression in the anterior spinal cord are also visible across the top of the head.
H. H. Opaque, surface view of a stage 24 embryo showing the superficial staining patterns of BMP-4 depicted in panel F.
I. J. K.
I. A stage 28 tailbud tadpole showing staining in the ventral visceral pouches, eye, otic vesicle and fin.
J. Close-up view of Stage 35 head showing staining in the eye, otic vesicle, ventral visceral pouches, near the heart, and adjacent to the cement gland.
K. BMP-4 expression in the otic vesicle is localized to the anterior and posterior edges
