Xenopus Twist; neural crest, lateral plate

Xenopus Twist, Xtwi, nucleic acid

Cloned by Nick Hopwood and John Gurdon, 1989. Use in wholemounts for anterior neural crest, Schuh et al., 1993. Photos by Tim Schuh. Also expressed (not obvious in the photos here) in the lateral plate.
A stage 23 embryo, lateral view. Stain is only obvious in the head crest.
A stage 26/27 embryo, lateral view. Once again, only head crest is obvious. Compare to xAP2 which stains more posterior crest in addition to the head. The four head crest streams are obvious. The most anterior is the mandibular crest segment moving around the developing eye. The second-most anterior segment is the hyoid crest. The third segment, which is still more dorsal than the more anterior segments at this stage is the anterior branchial crest, and the fourth stained segment located just posterior to this is the posterior branchial segment (Sadaghiani and Thibaud, 1987). The vagal and trunk crest are not stained.
