Xbra, Brachyury, nucleic acid

Cloned by Jim Smith et al., 1991 and independently by Paul Wilson. Very abundant mRNA, excellent marker of early mesoderm. Expression induced in animal caps by both FGF and activin.

Vegetal view of early gastrula, dorsal is to the right. The slight clear zone on the dorsal side could be due to the involution of Xbra positive cells, or the absense of xbra expression in head mesoderm. Photo by Ali Hemmati-Brivanlou.
