The rab8a protein is a small GTPase involved in membrane trafficking and vesicle transport. It localizes to the base of epidermal cilia and is required for ciliogenesis, with morpholino knockdown leading to gastrulation defects due to impaired convergent extension movements in the mesoderm. The protein facilitates melanosome movement and dispersion within melanophores by promoting their translocation to microtubule plus ends. Rab8a also functions in the exocytic pathway, regulating the transport of vesicles from the trans-Golgi network to the plasma membrane and playing a role in primary cilia formation. [-]
