The anapc16 gene encodes a component of the ana phase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C), which functions as an E3 ubiquitin ligase. This protein complex targets specific cell cycle regulators, such as cyclin B and securin, for degradation by the proteasome via polyubiquitination. It is involved in regulating the metaphase-to-anaphase transition and exit from mitosis. Expression is detected in the ovary, testis, and throughout early development including blastula, gastrula, neurula, and tailbud stages. The protein localizes to the nucleus and cytoplasm during interphase and to spindles and kinetochores during mitosis. [-]
