The e2f4 gene encodes a transcription factor protein of the e2f family which heterodimerizes with dp proteins to bind DNA. This complex regulates the transcription of genes involved in cell cycle progression, particularly during the g1/s phase transition by controlling the expression of genes necessary for DNA replication. The protein is nuclear localized and its function has been studied during early embryonic development including stages of neural crest formation and craniofacial development.
