The gmnc gene encodes a bHLH transcription factor protein localized to the nucleus which binds DNA and is required for multiciliogenesis. This protein functions in the development of motile cilia in multi-ciliated cells found within the ciliated epithelia of the skin, pharynx, pronephros, and neural tube. Its expression initiates the differentiation program for these cells by directly activating key genes involved in centriole multiplication and cilia formation. [-]
