The bag1 gene encodes a bcl-2-associated athanogene protein which functions as a co-chaperone that regulates the activity of Hsp70 chaperones. It modulates apoptosis and can bind to nuclear hormone receptors. In early development, its mRNA is expressed in the animal hemisphere of oocytes, eggs, and throughout blastula and gastrula stage embryos, with later expression observed in the brain, spinal cord, eye, branchial arches, and pronephros. The bag1 protein localizes to both the cytoplasm and the nucleus. [-]
