The itga3 gene encodes an integrin alpha subunit protein which forms a heterodimeric transmembrane receptor with beta subunits. In early development, itga3 functions in cranial neural crest cell migration and contributes to the formation of branchial arches. It is also involved in processes during gastrulation and neurulation. The protein localizes to the plasma membrane and facilitates cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix. [-]
