The pnpo gene encodes the enzyme pyridoxine 5'-phosphate oxidase which catalyzes the final step in the synthesis of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, the active form of vitamin B6. This enzymatic function involves oxidizing either pyridoxine 5'-phosphate or pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate to produce pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Expression is detected in the developing eye and neural tissue during embryogenesis. The protein localizes to the cytoplasm where it performs its metabolic conversion. [-]
