Erythropoietin (epo) is a secreted cytokine and signaling molecule that functions as the primary regulator of erythrocyte production, a process known as erythropoiesis. It binds to the epo receptor on erythroid progenitor cells to promote their survival, proliferation, and differentiation into mature red blood cells. Gene expression occurs in the pronephros and liver during development. The protein is synthesized as a pre-pro-protein that undergoes proteolytic processing and is subsequently secreted from the cell to act in the extracellular space. [-]
