Gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 is a neuropeptide signaling molecule synthesized as a preprohormone that is processed into a mature decapeptide. The gnrh1 protein functions primarily to stimulate the synthesis and release of pituitary gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, which regulate reproductive processes. This peptide is produced by neurons whose cell bodies are located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus and preoptic area, with axonal projections to the median eminence for neurosecretion into the portal blood system; additional gnrh1-expressing neurons are found in the terminal nerve ganglia. The mature peptide acts by binding to a specific G protein-coupled receptor on pituitary gonadotropes. [-]
