The vwf gene encodes a large multimeric glycoprotein that functions in hemostasis by mediating platelet adhesion and carrying factor VIII. In Xenopus laevis and Xenopus tropicalis, vwf is expressed in the vascular endothelium and is involved in blood coagulation. The protein is localized to Weibel-Palade bodies in endothelial cells and functions in platelet adhesion under high shear stress. It is a secreted glycoprotein that mediates platelet adhesion to the subendothelium.
