The kif5b gene encodes a microtubule-based motor protein responsible for anterograde transport of organelles, including mitochondria and vesicles, along microtubules in oocytes and early embryos. It facilitates the movement of cargo such as vg1 mRNA and vegt mRNA to the vegetal cortex during oogenesis. In spinal neurons and neural crest cells, kif5b mediates the transport of specific mRNAs essential for proper cell migration and function. The protein localizes to the cytoplasm and associates with vesicles and mitochondria. [-]
